Writer in Motion is back! I’ve been looking forward to this third round of Writer in Motion for a while now. Drafting has been tough lately. Words haven’t been flowing as easily as I’d like, and I really needed something to kick me out of it and get me drafting again. What better way to do that than with a short story? I’m usually not a short story kind of girl, but hopefully, taking an idea from prompt to polished over this month will get me back in the swing of things on my novels.
Anyhow, if you’re not familiar with Writer in Motion and would like more information, please check out the website.
Each round of Writer in Motion (WIM) starts with a prompt. One image. That’s it. It’s the same image for everyone, yet in the past two rounds, each writer has come up with wildly different ideas. It’ll be interesting to see where everyone takes it this time.
So, without further ado, here’s the prompt we’re working with:
In past rounds, as story idea has come to me quickly. In round one, it struck like lightning as soon as I saw the image. Round 2, flashed into my mind quite quickly too. This one has been a bit slower.
I looked at the image. Examined it. Waited for a story to form within my mind.
Nothing.
So, I waited some more and pushed myself to step into the picture itself. Warm mountain air faded to evening chill. Bugs called out a symphony of noises. A stray bird call joined their chorus. It was a peaceful place, a familiar one. It reminded me a lot of the mountains in Colorado where I used to live. And then, the beginnings of a story struck me. I saw a young woman walking through the woods and coming upon this scene. She was happy, excited. Something or someone waited for her at that worn-down, old building on the hillside. But when she got there, she looked down and saw something she never expected.
What is it? Who is she? What’s her story?
You’ll have to wait until my first draft to find out. 😊
